If a disaster struck St. Pete what would we do?
At our Bonus meeting in July we ran through a scenario where some sisters were injured, out of town, or in need of some supplies. As a Relief Society we assessed the needs, delivered supplies, and helped those who were injured. We had a fun time figuring out who needed what and who had extra to give. We learned that “[The Lord’s storehouse] includes Church members’ offerings of time, talents, compassion, materials, and financial means that are made available to the bishop to help care for the poor and needy. The Lord’s storehouse, then, exists in each ward” (Handbook 2, 6.1.3).
A lot of us thought we could just build up our supply and use what we had for ourselves, but we really have the opportunity to share what we can to make sure everyone has what they need.
Rachele Larsen brought her 72 hour kit and went through some great ideas for things we can do to be ready in an emergency. Here are some ideas:
-Recent Family Picture on every pack with birthdays and phone numbers in case someone in your family gets separated
-Copies of important documents and money in every pack in case you get separated from the rest of your family. That way everyone has some money (Small bills).
-Some food for every person for every day. You can split this up in Ziplocs or in a pre-made kit you can buy at emergency essentials.
-As much water as you can feasibly carry
-Other emergency items. Lists are available on the church's Provident Living Website--most of these items you can get for free from traveling or they're in your house somewhere.
-Great gift ideas to get a little kit that includes these items.
-You can keep a list of your food items and when they are expire so you can change out those items as needed.
-Current change of clothes
Sister Janet Hunt asked everyone to please update their information on the ward website about your job and skills. This information will be used in an emergency to provide help for those who need services that you might be able to offer.
